This coffee represents a more than 10-year relationship with the Akha people. We have been working directly with the farmers on this mountain for over a decade. We travel to Pha Hee each year to inspect the crop, select our stock and work with the team who process the coffee berries to ensure we purchase only the highest quality green beans are purchased.
Baan pha hee is located in the Pong Ngam subdistrict, a small, scenic community along the route from Doi Tung to Doi Chang Mub, descending toward Tham Luang cave. The village sits roughly 13 kilometres above Baan Pha Mee on the lower plains. Traditionally inhabited by the Akha hill tribe, the community once relied heavily on opium cultivation for survival.
Around 1981, the Thai government began encouraging a transition away from opium, promoting coffee as a sustainable alternative. This shift gained momentum in 1988 with the launch of the Doi Tung development project and the establishment of coffee research plots in the region. The introduction of coffee provided the villagers with a stable, legal, and long-term source of income, reducing dependence on illicit crops and supporting regional security.
Economically, coffee farming has offered fairer prices, access to training, and new market opportunities. Culturally, it has strengthened community identity and pride, allowing the Akha people to preserve their traditions while building a livelihood that supports future generations. Today, coffee cultivation remains the primary occupation of Baan Pha Hee, symbolising the village’s successful transformation and continued development.
